Designer Babies
- defined as “a baby whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected by genetic engineering combined with in vitro fertilization to ensure the presence or absence of particular genes or characteristics.”
- creation of designer babies involves techniques like IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis)
- IVF: fertilise eggs with sperm in ‘test-tubes’ outside the mother’s body in a laboratory. Allow doctors and parents to reduce the chance that a child will be born with a genetic disorder.
- PGD: screens embryos for a genetic disease: only selected embryos are implanted back into the mother’s womb.
